This in part is a continuation of Big Boy Brands vs China brands, and Buying China Phones – The Pits and the Falls. While the China phone brand market may be well known to many of our readers, the huge majority of the public has never heard of Jiayu, THL, Amoi, Zopo and the like. They’ve become slightly better known since MTK released their 8-core MT6592, but still 99%+ have never heard of any China brands. Even brands such as Huawei and Oppo are little known to many.

In Asia, including China, many people have never heard of the China brands which are well known to many of us. I spend a lot of time in Thailand, famous for cheap copies and clones, and the shop owners here shun any brand made in China.

The same goes for friends of China phone users who talk about their new China phone with a giant smile, only to be ridiculed by their buddies who think Samsung and Apple are the only phones worth buying. Part of this is due to trying to ‘keep’ the value of their own phone. If they acknowledge to themselves that perhaps their $800 iPhone isn’t better than our $200 China brand phone, that means they must also acknowledge they more or less wasted $600.

That’s not to say that we don’t acknowledge China brands have a long way to come. In terms of quality of components, the good China models are equal or nearly equal to the likes of Samsung, Apple and HTC. In terms of quality control, customer service, sales knowledge and support, and transparency (truth), the China brands have a very very long way to come.

It’s interesting to be a part of this rapidly growing trend though. Often the expectations of many have outweighed the reality. It’s also often the opposite, the reality surprises expectations and people are genuinely surprised at just how good China brands can be.
