My parcel arrived by DHL and as always it was fast. It only took 3 days to get from China to Canada once it was picked up. The only down side was the extra $25 import charge. I usually ship EMS, but I was willing to pay the extra money this time as I was without a phone.

The packaging of the Zopo was sturdy and stylish, giving me confidence I had purchased something worth my money.

Accessories

Inside the box was a standard affair. Included was a micro USB cable, the Chinese wall charger, an adapter for North America, some average ear buds, a quick start guide (printed in English), and a battery. My Zopo ZP990 that I had purchased last year came with two batteries so I was hoping for the same here but that was not the case this time around. Not a deal breaker but it’s always nice to get that second battery, especially if you think you might want to keep the phone for a while or if you are a battery swapper.

As a whole everything was packaged well and added to the overall presentation.

First impressions

When I first picked up the phone I was surprised how thin it felt when it actually is 9.1mm in depth. The handset is very comfortable to hold considering it’s 5.5” display. While it’s not the lightest at 169g, the extra weight adds to a feel of quality. I think the reason it feels so thin and comfortable is the the way Zopo have perfectly angled the sides. It’s a simple thing but it makes a big difference.

Outside the phone

The back of the phone is slightly textured. It does look nice, but doesn’t seem to help with grip. The buttons were seated perfectly. They were easy to press but didn’t have a loose, wobbly feeling that makes you question if they will still work in a month or two. A unique but welcome addition is that of a dedicated camera button above the power button. While I have never struggled to make do using just the screen to snap pics, it never hurts to have options.

Inside the phone

Inside the phone, the 2400 mAh battery sits snugly in place but comes out easily when pulled on. Unlike some other phones I’ve used in the past, my SIM and micro SD cards went into the slots with no resistance and were removed with little resistance. Everything is clearly labeled leaving no room to question what is what.

Conclusion

This phone feels great. Some thought actually went into the design and the quality is well above par. Many phones I have tried have a very cheap, plastic feel to them even though they are good phones. The ZP998 is not one of them. It feels like a premium product and if it performs as well as the impression it gives off, then I will be very pleased with the purchase.

I’m very excited to try out this phone and I will be writing a full review of all my findings within the next couple days.
