Though MediaTek / MTK has been around for 15 years, they were relatively unknown until about a year ago when they released their first CPU that could run full, real Android. That CPU was the MTK6516.

The MTK6516 is 416Mhz, and can run Android 2.1 and 2.2 relatively smoothly, though delays were frequent with the small amounts of RAM and slow CPU. There is no onboard GPU, so anything beyond the most basic games are unplayable.

Fast forward barely a year and a half and we’re looking at 1.7Ghz quad-cores with the SGX544 – a GPU which can run circles around any Android game currently out, and likely will be able to play anything that comes out within the next couple years as well.

MediaTek / MTK got a big boost when Lenovo went with the mtk mt6575 / mtk6575 CPU in the Lenovo a750. Other companies surely took notice.

The CPUs coming from MediaTek / MTK are half the price of Qualcomm’s equivalent. That translates into millions of dollars in profit gain for a manufacturer of a popular model smart phone.

If I were Qualcomm, right about now I’d be seriously looking at my game plan, as MediaTek / MTK has slipped into 5th place regarding mobile CPU sales! They’ve overtaken Marvell and are now in 5th behind Qualcomm, Samsung, TI and Broadcom.

Hot on the heels of the mtk mt6577 / mtk6577 is the MTK MT6589 / MTK6589 due to be released in smart phones coming out possibly as early as next month. Already word of the mtk mt6599 / mtk6599 is out. It will be 8-core and have support for LTE and 4G on-board! MTK promises additional surprises with the mtk mt6599 / mtk6599 as well.

We’re definitely looking forward to hearing more news about the mtk mt6599 / mtk6599, and will let you know as soon as more info is released.
