One of the first manufacturers to put out a phone with dual rear cameras is now rumored to be releasing a triple lens rear camera on the upcoming P11.

All of Huawei’s current dual-camera phones use a 12MP RGB sensor combined with a 20MP monochrome sensor to improve dynamic range (DR), noise, zoom, and software bokeh. The new P11 however, will be carrying three rear camera sensors.

According to rumors, the setup will allow for 40MP images and a digital 5x zoom. The 5x zoom, in theory, will give similar quality as a true optical zoom thanks to clever software algorithms used to combine images from the three separate sensors.

The camera setup will be designed from the ground up by one of the top names in the camera business, Leica.

Word is that the P11 cameras will capture 100% more light due to the third sensor and other camera module modifications.

In the leaked images, we see several images showing “PRO TRIPLE-LENS”, “PRO SELFIE”, “PRO NIGHT MODE”, and “PRO CAMERA ASSIST”.

The Pro Night Mode is said to allow for high-quality night shots without the need of a tripod. Traditionally, to get a clean night scenery shot a low ISO is required. However, this does not jibe well with low amounts of light and generally requires the shutter to stay open for longer periods of time. The additional image data by the third sensor will effectively allow more light, which will allow for shutter speeds fast enough to hand hold.

In addition to the rear camera rumor, the P11 is reported to also feature a true optical 24MP front camera.
