zopo_zp980__android4.2_phoneWe previewed it, then we we posted the unboxing and initial thoughts, and now that we’ve had a few days to play with the MTK6592 Zopo zp980+, we’ll get a bit deeper into our experience with the phone.

Interesting that we received a 1GB/32GB model as opposed to what’s advertised by Zopo and on the box. Regardless, we can’t say the larger storage was a disappointment. We also can’t say whether or not the factory will be making them this way from now on. Our guess is yes, but we have yet to confirm it.

Zopo ZP980+ Physical Build and Feel

This phone feels great in the hand. The matte back adds super class and even after playing with it for several days, there isn’t a single finger print to found on the matte backed case, or on the matte back of the phone. It almost feels like some kind of Teflon and we’d love to see more China brands catch up on this cheap, easy way to add tons of class to their phones.

The phone is solid in the hand and with the case and it’s rubberized sides, makes it easy to grip.

The back snapped on and off easily, but not too easily, with clear and strong clicks into place.

The USB port was also all class, with the USB plugging in crisp and sure. Actually out of the all phones we’ve tested, this USB port is one of the most solid. This is another inexpensive, easy way to add a bit of class to a phone. When it snaps in, you know it’s in, but it’s not so tight that it’s difficult.

We really liked the way the zp980+ felt and looked. All class. They even had a factory added screen guard covering the camera glass. An excellent move by Zopo, and as far as we could tell it didn’t affect the quality of the photos.

Zopo ZP980+ LCD

The LCD on the ZP980+ is 1080p, and it shows. While I’ve written often about the average user normally not being able to notice the difference, it’s still occasionally possible to see some slight pixelation with 720p on 5.0″ LCDs. The extra PPI on the ZP980+ made things absolutely as crisp as they could be. Even the tiniest text was beautiful and legible.

The OGS LCD, in spite of the screen guard, makes it seem that your finger is right up against the images on the screen. Even when looking from extreme angles at your finger on the screen, it appears as if you are directly touching the image with nothing between your finger and the image.

Zopo ZP980+ WiFi

The H9008 has excellent WiFi reception, but the Zopo ZP980+ may beat it out. It’s WiFi reception can be classified as excellent. Files transferred quick and true and the signal was never lost or intermittent.

Zopo ZP980+ Review LED / External speaker

The external speaker can be classified as very good. It’s loud and clear and easily enough to fill a room. It would be difficult to expect much more out of a China phone, or indeed any smartphone. There are louder phones out there, but the loudspeaker in the Zopo ZP980+ is well beyond adequate.

The LED torch/flashlight is super bright and can be classified as excellent.

So far the ZP980+ looks a treat doesn’t it? Let’s see if it holds up under closer scrutiny. Check out the follow up tomorrow when we’ll cover GPS, battery life, earpiece, microphone and general performance.
