umi_x3_mt6592About a month back, we put a preview up of the Umi X3. Well now it’s ready to be sold and shops are starting to have it available for shipping. Unfortunately, some of the touted features we wrote about in the first preview are not to be. What it looks like is that there will be at least two different versions of the Umi X3.

The most disappointing news is that this first Umi X3 will not have LTE. Also the 2.0GHz version has yet to be released, but the 1.7GHz version should provide enough juice for everyone.

The MT6592 Umi X3 has a 5.5″ FHD 1080p LCD. RAM is 2GB and ROM/storage is 32GB.

Looks

Though Umi is one of the better quality brand names in China phones, unfortunately they rarely make anything unique looking, sticking to the tried and true Samsungish formula. Fortunately they’ve at least followed suit with Samsung and made the corners somewhat squarish.

We’d love to see Umi try something different. A little boldness in design goes a long way, as shown with the never-ending hysteria surrounding the difficult to get iNew V3. China is great at copying things, but rarely take chances with new, bold designs. The Umi is the perfect phone to do it because they already have a very good name, so the risk would be minimal.

Still, they’ve stuck to traditional, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. The phone looks fine and is rather slim at <9mm. The Umi X3 has a slim silver band of plastic trim running around the outside edge of the bezel that adds at least a little style. The dual speaker ports also add a bit of style to the back.

RAM and Storage (ROM)

A large 2GB RAM and big 16GB ROM/storage is what’s included with the Umi X3. 2GB is still rather special in China phones in 2014. It’s good to see it in the Umi X3. Though most users will have a difficult time telling the difference between 1GB and 2GB in day to day operation, it can’t hurt to have 2GB and it will mean Android will be able to keep more browser tabs and apps in memory, occasionally making switches between apps slightly quicker.

Resolution & LCD

The Umi X3 has gone FHD 1080p with this unit. This will mean super crisp display on a 5.5″ LCD. As well the X3 will be IPS which means viewing from even extreme angles should provide true and crisp colors and contrast. OGS is fairly standard fare for 2014, and the Umi X3 will be OGS display.

Battery

As reported at most shops, the Umi X3 battery is 3150mA. This is very large for a 5.5″ phone and should make big battery lovers happy. Though the MT6592 SoC has not fared so well with 1080p in our previous tests in regards to battery life, 3150mA should do the trick and provide enough juice for even power users to get through the day.

Price

The price is very good for a phone with the Umi name and 2GB RAM. As of March, 2014, the phone is in the $250 ballpark.

Extra Features

OTG and NFC.

Umi X3 review specification verdict

If you know China phones, you know about Umi. They have been synonymous with quality in the China phone world. We’d love to see them be a bit more adventurous with the looks of their phones, but as it is the phone looks fine with a slim profile and squarish corners.

The battery is a huge plus with this phone. Though we haven’t tested the Umi X3 yet, 3150mA should give it a big step above the MTK6592 1080p competition in regards to battery life.

Unfortunately, the reported LTE will not be included in this first version of Umi X3. Note also there have been some discrepancies with UMTS/WCDMA/3G frequency support. Some shops reporting it as 900/2100, some reporting it as 850/2100 and most reporting it as just 2100MHz. If you’re in the Americas, it would be better to play it on the safe side and wait until we get further clarification.

Though the 2.0GHz version hasn’t been released yet, this isn’t a big negative.

Despite the disappointments regarding lack of LTE and 2.0GHz MTK6592, for the specs of this phone, the price is right and you can’t go wrong with Umi.
