Many are looking forward to the Jiayu F1, a 399 yuan entry level phone from the company that’s been a great name in China brands over the last several years.

Let’s take a look and see if the reported specs are worth the rumored price.

There are $50 Android phones available now, but most of them aren’t worth it except possibly for kids. They normally have 512MB ROM 256MB RAM.

The Jiayu F1 on the other hand has 512MB RAM and 4GB ROM. Not bad for a $50 phone. LCD will be 4.0″ 800*480. Cameras will be .3MP front, 5mp rear. Battery will be a hefty 2400mA – huge for a 4.0″ phone. SoC will be MT6572.

For $50 you can’t want much else, but unless this is a gift for a kid or to be used as a backup phone, you’re better off investing the extra dough. The main issue here is RAM. 512MB is just not enough to run smoothly. We’d have liked to have seen Jiayu up it to 1GB and MT6582. Even if it meant a $25 increase in price.

Still, as mentioned, it could be a good first phone for your kid, or possibly as a backup for when you’re in situations other than optimal for a $300 phone. Example, camping, hiking, sports etc…
